How to Glue Acrylic

Gluing acrylic is easy when you use the right glue and techniques.

To glue acrylic or plexiglass you need to buy the special adhesives for gluing, a popular brand is Weld On who make a variety of glues for different purposes.  Also for gluing small projects you can use +Loctite Super Glue.

The acrylic edge needs to be as smooth as possible to form a nice clear bond and you can either put the glue on the edge with a artist brush, Qtip or on large joints a syring using capillary action of the solution.

Custom Display

There are a few items to think about when designing a custom display to suit your needs.

1. Is there a similar stock product you can work off of, this makes it easier for the manufacturer to come up with a competitive and quick price when you use an existing stock display as the starting point.

2. The quantity of displays you will need produced.

3. If the unit is completely custom a simple hand sketch with dimensions will help the process a lot.  It doesn't have to be drawn by an artist, just a simple sketch.  Like they say "pictures say a 1000 words".

4. Size of the area the display will be put in, type of environment, there is a difference between a display you would use in a doctor's office compared to a display for a high traffic store like +Walmart

5. Estimated target budget per display. Have a realistic budget and design, a good display manufacturer can help put you in the display at the budget if you share a range with them.

These simple ideas will help you with your custom display projects.  See more of our custom displays at pop2go

How to Cut Acrylic

There are two ways to cut Acrylic sheets, by hand or by using a circular saw.  Both are effective but when cutting over 1/8" thick piece of Plexiglass or Acrylic this method gets very difficult.

For cutting by hand you need a straight edge ruler, a metal ruler is preferable, a utility knife and safety glasses.  Put the straight edge on the acrylic and run the knife down against the edge of the ruler to put a score line in the acrylic.  I suggest running the knife multiple times down the line so that the line becomes easier to snap.  Now take the sheet with a hand on either side of the score line and snap it.  This is the same way that glass is cut.  The thinner the sheet the more effective this technique is.

To cut with a circular saw what you need is a 80 tooth or higher blade.  The higher the tooth count the less chipping you will have.  Slowly feed the acrylic into the saw, you will get a white melted edge that forms on both sides of the blade, that is alright, the key here is not to make too many chips in the plexiglass.  After cutting you can clean up the edge with a utility knife being dragged down the edge or you can run the saw cut edge through a Jointer which is preferable.

You can see more extensive instructions on cutting acrylic at our technical pages on our website.

Proper Storage of Acrylic Sheet Material

To protect acrylic sheet from dirt and moisture, skids and cases are shipped with polyethylene film overwrap. Make sure to leave this overwrap intact. Folding and re-taping the overwrap after it has been opened will minimize warpage which can result from moisture absorption.

Ideally, acrylic sheet should be stored almost vertically in special racks with plywood panels for full support where sheets can lean at about a 100 angle. If stored horizontally, sheets must be clean because the weight of the material can cause dirt or chips to pierce the protective masking, thereby scraping or indenting the sheet. When stacking various sizes horizontally, make sure to put the larger sheet on the bottom to avoid unsupported overhang.

Finally, keep acrylic sheet away from heat sources, such as radiators or steam pipes, which can deform or soften the sheet. Avoid placing acrylic sheet near spray painting booths or exposing it to solvent vapors which can penetrate the masking and damage the sheet2s surface.
