JC Penny Saying Thank You to Customers

JCPenney (Plano, Texas) launched an ad campaign roughly two weeks ago that apologized to customers for straying too far from “its heritage.” Now, a new spot is thanking customers for returning to its stores, according to AdvertisingAge (adage.com). The aforementioned apology ad bluntly stated that the retailer’s turnaround efforts had failed, and was paired with a “#JCPListens” hashtag on its social media sites, encouraging customers to give honest feedback.
The newest ad shows depictions of mothers with their children with a voice-over that states, “We’re happy to say you’ve come back to us. Thank you,” AdvertisingAge reports. JCPenney’s new advertising agency, Y&R (New York), began posting the video to the web on Monday.

Target Taps Phillip Lin

Target Corp. (Minneapolis) has acquired Phillip Lim as its newest guest designer and collaborator, The Wall Street Journal reports. Lim’s lines for men and women, as well as accessories, will be available for a short time in September 2013.
Lim founded his label, 3.1 Phillip Lim, in 2005 and was reportedly on Target’s “wish list” for several years. According to WSJ, Lim was hesitant to partner with Target until his brand started to gain more traction internationally and finally agreed to the collaboration last fall.
Other retailers are following similar paths, such as H&M’s (Stockholm, Sweden) collaboration with Versace and Narciso Rodriguez working with Kohl’s (Menomonee Falls, Wis.). Even Gap (San Francisco) now sells a collection for children by Diane von Furstenberg, WSJ reports

JC Penny Seeks To Raise Cash for Retail Operations

JCPenney Co. Inc. (Plano, Texas) has filed a shelf registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission intended to raise more money and stabilize the business.

According to Women’s Wear Daily, the filing would allow the ailing retail organization to sell “common stock, preferred stock, depository shares, debt securities, guarantees of JCP debt securities, warrants, stock purchase contracts and stock purchase units.”

Earlier this month, JCPenney drew on $850 million of its credit facility and, said WWD, “is working with a host of financial advisers and exploring numerous ways to raise money.”

That might include its considerable real estate holdings. JCPenney’s owns about 430 of its 1100 retail units.

JCPenney’s lost nearly $1 billion last year and is said to have burned through more than $1 billion in cash in the first quarter.
